That Time I Did Powerlifting

I started PL in 2014 after the recommendation from a work colleague at the time. At this stage I was studying and working 3 jobs (I hated being bored at home) but still managed to fit in two PT sessions a week to kick start my PL journey.

Having a dance background, I am very in-tune with my body and how it moves. I have always had a decent amount of mobility and my ballet training gave me allllllll of the stability! So, put all of this together and you've got a pretty natural lifter on your hands.

After a few months of doing twice weekly PT sessions, I decided I had enough knowledge to lead myself for 2 sessions a week and so I dropped to just 1 PT. Now I was lifting 3 times a week, teaching 5 dance classes a week and studying my diploma of remedial massage - talk about calorie outtake! (Thank God because this gal can eat.)

It was this stage of my journey that I became the strongest, and fittest I had ever remembered feeling. As my numbers grew on the bar, I decided to enter an in-house PL competition at my gym. To help me out the same work colleague (a good mate) wrote up a nutrition plan for me to 'cut' down to fit into the <63kg weight class. Today, I consider this to be one of the biggest learning curves of my life. I grew a great respect for nutrition and my body in this time and learnt A LOT about calorie counting, macros, digestion, how certain foods effect the body & why we need to fuel our fitness. This was absolutely the time in my life when I realised that health & fitness was truly a passion of mine and I wanted to learn ALL OF THE KNOWLEDGE! ...and I haven't looked back since.

Powerlifting came at the perfect time for me, whilst studying I would use my own body as guinea pig and if I was ever injured I was the first to run up to my teacher and ask for a lesson and assessment. I made amazing bonds with the staff and trainers at the gym I was lifting at, and will always cherish fitting in my sessions at 6am after scraping off the ice on my car in -7 degrees! #CBR

What powerlifting taught me

Lifting made me feel strong, independent, in charge of my own body and capable of doing anything. It gave me a new perspective on nutrition for fitness & allowed me to be the powerful woman I have always felt inside. I would recommend trying this sport to ANYONE wanting to lose fat, gain muscle, feel great and CRUSH GOALS!

Powerlifting will always have my heart and I can't thank the people who supported me enough for how much they have impacted me and my fitness journey.

Three white lights, baby!
