What I Learnt In My First Week of Muay Thai Training In Thailand

Sawasdee Ka! My first week here at the Tiger Muay Thai training camp has been nothing less than amazing. The facilities, the people and the knowledge they bring aren't anything close to what I have seen in any country before. Here is a short list of the things I have (quickly) learnt at the camp so far:

1. You will sweat. A lot.

Yep, its here to stay. Mix the humidity, temperature and the outdoor classes and all of a sudden you're in a pool of your own sweat (and your partners).

Pros: I've lost a heap of water weight

Cons: It's absolutely feral to share body fluids with 20 other strangers

2. The trainers are 100% there for you.

The trainers are what makes Tiger so amazing to me. They all make an effort to come up to you and say good morning, and are more than happy to share a sneaky new technique or two while class is in session. I have had Kru Em be my main trainer in this first week, holding pads and kicking my ass is what he's best at.

Pros: I feel like I have a new family

Cons: I'm already sad thinking about leaving them

3. Two hour training sessions are the norm.

All Muay Thai classes here are 2 hours long, which includes a full warm up and cool down, techniques, sparring, bag work, clinching (sometimes) and cardio (send help). I did a Crossfit class the other night after already training Muay Thai in the morning, and it was the quickest 60 minutes of my life. I feel like now I can never go back to 60 minute sessions again!

Pros: I already feel the fittest I have ever been

Cons: Who the fuck in their right mind trains for 2 hours?

4. Do not underestimate the power of Yoga

Before the first Muay Thai class of the day, I attend the early morning yoga class held in the highest room of the camp, giving you views of Big Buddha and the mountains. I have done this every morning it is on, and now consider myself a #yogi.

Not really... but I do appreciate and utilise the benefits of this class. This class gets my muscles warm and long, ready for the days training. I have already seen massive improvements in my flexibility and stability which only makes me want to go back for more!

Pros: Being flexible and having a stabilised pelvis is crucial for balance and technique in Muay Thai

Cons: Thanks to the 6:30am classes, my legs are covered in mozzie bites. So cute

Four lessons. Four pros & four cons. Although the pros definitely out-weigh the cons! I am having the best time of my life here in Phuket and I can see already that attending this camp has definitely changed my life. Kob Kun Ka!
